鯉を食べたがらない梶田老人のわけをみんな聞きたがった。梶田老人は話はじめた。
幕末の嘉永六年三月三日、菊屋橋の川筋で途方もなく大きな鯉が生け捕りにされた。不忍の池から流れ出してきたのだろうが、三尺八寸の大物だった。どうしようか思案していると、桃井弥三郎という道楽者の旗本の次男と常磐津の師匠で文字友という女が鯉を食べるからと云って一朱で買い取った。弥三郎が鯉を脇差で突き殺そうとしたところを、若い奉公人（梶田）を連れた和泉屋という商人が通りかかり、恋を助けてやってくれと云って弥三郎に一両を渡し、鯉を龍宝寺にある大きい池に放してやる。しかし鯉は弥十郎から受けた傷がもとであくる日死んでしまった。
岡本綺堂（おかもと きどう、1872年11月15日（明治5年10月15日） - 1939年3月1日）
日本の小説家、劇作家。本名は岡本 敬二（おかもと けいじ）。
別号に狂綺堂、鬼菫、甲字楼など。新歌舞伎の作者として知られ、また著名な作品として小説「半七捕物帳」などがある。
養子の岡本経一は、出版社「青蛙房」の創業者で、社名は綺堂の作品「青蛙堂鬼談」に由来している。
