禅智内供という僧侶の鼻は太くて長く、五、六寸（15cmから18cm）ある。細長い腸詰めのようなものがぶらりと顔のまん中からぶら下がっている。僧侶は自分の鼻が気になってしかたがない。あるとき弟子のひとりが鼻を短くする方法を習ってきたと言う。そこで・・・。僧侶の心の動きを細やかに描写することで傍観者のエゴイズムとそれに振り回されるあわれな人間の姿を浮彫りにしたと文学史の中で評価されているようだ。©2023 南郷芳明
