About this listen
'Thoroughly compelling' Mail on Sunday
A compelling psychological thriller about freedom, control and the women who fight back.
When sisters Celine and Pip return to their deceased mother's riverside home, the memory of their murdered sister Vanessa haunts every room. Fifteen years have passed since Vanessa's brutal death and her killer has never been found.
Then another young woman's body is discovered nearby, killed in strikingly similar fashion. Police attention turns to Two Cross Farm, a reclusive women's commune operating behind padlocked gates for decades. Exactly 33 women live there.
The sisters know the commune is hiding something. The question is: how do you expose a killer when everyone inside has sworn to protect each other? How many more will die before the truth comes out? And what is the significance of the number 33?
Perfect for readers who love Ruth Ware's The Woman in Cabin 10, Alex Michaelides' The Silent Patient and Paula Hawkins' Into the Water. ©2020 Isabel Ashdown
Critic Reviews
33 Women is an atmospheric, captivating invitation into a dark world. I loved the persistent, suffocating beat of menace that simmered behind each sentence. Highly recommended!
Although I hate the word 'unputdownable', it's the only way to describe this tour de force from Isabel Ashdown. A long-dead sister, a secretive community of women, a family reunited by a death... the perfect ingredients for a tale that skilfully weaves past secrets and current crimes into a shocking denouement.
An unexpectedly timely novel about searching for your true self in an isolated world. With that rare thing, a twist I genuinely never saw coming.
Ashdown skilfully incorporates big moral questions into a thoroughly compelling thriller.
With atmosphere and surprises aplenty, this will keep you gripped.
