Publisher's Summary

A tragic case of arson sends Sarah into hiding to escape the terrible fate of her family. She works as a common laborer, and is safe for 13 years, until she receives an ominous note. Despite her disguise, the killer has caught up with her, and she is once again in danger from a man determined to silence all echoes from the past.

William, an inquiry agent, is consumed with curiosity when he meets Sarah and hears about her case. And one look into her gray eyes has him hooked. Even though the evidence is scanty after so many years, he vows to assist her, unaware how events will challenge him both as a man of honor and as an investigator.

When a second attempt is made on Sarah's life, William is forced to follow a treacherous path through the twisted, dark past. And his growing attraction to the independent woman proves just as dangerous. He needs a clear head to sift through the ashes of the old tragedy, with its hints of corruption reaching into the highest levels of society. Above all, he must protect Sarah, regardless of personal cost.

Love must find a way to bring the two together and thwart a desperate arsonist, or the last survivor of the long-ago fire will die.

Difficult to get into

The book has too much detailed and tedious narrative and too little dialogue. Therefore, it lacks nuance and character interaction that lets us really get to know the characters and bond with them. A lot of repetition of info, thoughts, and reflection. The narration was okay, but a little too monotone and sing song for my taste. I found it grating after awhile and switched to listening in fast speed.

What an imagination

This book was wonderful. Sarah has such a hard time of it. She persisted through all the bad luck. With some humor added in which made it even funnier to listen to.

Well done!

Loved this story. Interesting and creative. I enjoyed the story and the fact that the author relied on the story line to engage the reader rather than bedroom scenes.

Great story, just a tiny bit infuriating

I enjoyed the book immensely but was a little irritated with the characters sometimes crazy decisions or ability to do things they shouldn't be able to. That said I couldn't stop listening so must be good.

A Riotous Tale from the first page!

I'm so glad I didn't give up on this series after the first book. Mr Archer and Lady V are wonderful supporting characters and in this book the story that surrounds them had me hooked from the beginning!

You will not be lacking for intrigue and action. I rather wondered whether poor Sarah would make it to the end of the book!

A thoroughly enjoyable read! I'm off to the next in series...
