About this listen

Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance.

But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries....

This was such a delightful, witty and heartwarming book. Baking and witching together? Say less.

Delightful

The book is beautifully written and narrated to come out as a cosy fantasy. It frequents funny interactions, blunt observations, and clever magic possibilities. The narrator makes it a delightful and soothing story to listen to.

A great imaginative fantasy

This story was wonderfully delightful and as always T Kingfisher balances the elements of high fantasy with humour. The performance was good but I wish they’d chosen a narrator with a softer, less mature voice. The rather husky older-sounding voice of the narrator did not suit the 14 year old heroine of the book. Every time the idea of a prepubescent teenage girl came across in the story, I was taken aback. This would not have happened in a textual reading, because the voice in the audiobook did not match up at all.

A version of cozy fantasy

The story in itself is fast paced and amazing, full of action. I think this will be enjoyed a lot by teens and tweens. But the narration makes it even better. Loved it. Thank you

Amazing Narration

the concept is quite unique in terms of how magic is being used as most other main characters use elements to fight and such most other listeners opinions are spot on as for someone saying narrators age not matching the main characters age that's true.
• as sometimes one forgets she's just 13 which portrays how vulnerable her situation is so i hope it's kept in mind for future works but as the story was good and narration itself explained how vulnerable and unfair her situation is I was able to overlook that.

• love this books take on heroism of how it shares over expectations of heroes and unfair burdens on them as such.

funny, heartwarming & thrilling magical mystery.
