Lucky

Two years ago I humiliated myself by declaring my love to an older man who clearly didn’t share my feelings. And that’s fine. One day Zach will come around. Meanwhile, I’ve built a life for myself in northern Montana, pursuing my college degree while working hard toward certification in high-risk alpine search and rescue on the side. And perhaps I’ve kept the danger part a secret from my two dads. After all, what they don’t know won’t hurt them...

Everything’s going exactly as planned until my dads send Zach to check on me just as I’m dealing with an ex who doesn’t understand the meaning of the word no. It’s bad enough Zach still thinks of me as a child; now he also thinks I’m incapable of looking out for myself. I need to get him off my back before he finds out I’m not heading to Wyoming for summer break like everyone thinks. I’m going to Glacier National Park to learn how to rappel from helicopters...

Zach

Two years ago I wanted something I couldn't have, so I threw myself back into my job as an Army Ranger and wound up scarred in more ways than one. When the army dumps my sorry self back into the real world, it’s time to start over. I accept a summer job teaching high-risk search and rescue. On the way there, all I have to do is peek in on little Lucky Reed and make sure he’s okay.

He’s not. Someone has it out for him, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to let him get hurt on my watch. My plan is to keep him safe until he heads south for his summer job playing trail guide to tourists. Once he’s gone, I’ll be free to head to Glacier where my biggest challenge will be keeping a handful of alpine search and rescue students safe as they learn how to dangle from helicopters high above the Rocky Mountains.

It’s all fine. Until it’s not. Danger follows us to Glacier, and by the time I finally start seeing Lucky as more than the awkward teenager he used to be, I wonder if it’s too late to convince him that this scarred soldier sees him as anything but little anymore.

Disappointed

Listened to Audio Book twice and read the Kindle version once. Didn't like the pairing. Thought phrasing was repetitive. Lucky was one of my favorite characters in the series, but think that he was short changed in this one. Having PTSD, and having been married to a guy who was 11 years younger, I just plain don't think that it was realistic. Michael saved the book in the Audible version, but overall it was a letdown.

Narrator Michael Dean gave another sensationally entertaining performance of the popular Twist of Fate series. His talented delivery will impress new listeners and old fans alike. His passionate portrayal of a broken man was truly an admirable effort.

Zack was so deeply hurt by another man and he has buckets full of unresolved issues. He was asked to keep an eye on Lucky, but soon it turned into more, of cause it did…

This was one hell of an irritating book, I felt like screaming at Zack a few times. In my eyes he is an asshole. He played yo-yo with Lucky, and Lucky is like an abused puppy, who continuously comes back for more.

If I was Lucky, I would have told him to fuck off a long time ago.

While I’m irritated; what was up with the spray painted car, the notes and cut rope. It’s a big deal! I feel the authors cut the story short or had it going too wide. Then just as a by-thought said it was a jealous co-worker. Yes right? WTF??

I don’t recommend this audiobook. The plot did not make sense to me. If you can overlook that and if you are inquisitive. Then go ahead, I warned you…

An angsty age gap opposites attract!

This is book 4 in the Above and Beyond series and can be listened to /read as a standalone.

This was a sweet and sexy, age gap opposites attract, grab you by the feels romance.

Michael Dean's audio delivery and performance was absolutely stunning and entertaining.

Lucky was sweet and strong in his own way and am happy he stuck by Zack no matter what he threw at him.

Zack had his own demons to face before he truly let his walls down.
But giving up Lucky was never an option no matter how hard he tried.

This was an angsty listen and I loved every moment of it despite wanting to slap a few characters upside-down!

Overall an amazing addition to the series!

angsty with a little story

i so wanted to love this book. i enjoy a bit of angst in a story, it adds to the enjoyment. this. book. dripped. angst. it's leaking from my phone making a mess. it's a fantastic story but JUST SOOOOOO NOT my cuppa. if you like a glacial slow burn you'll like this story. Just couldn't get past all the torture. it kept me from getting into the story

A disappointment...

I have been a big fan of this series until this book. I’m sorry to say that I did not finish it-I gave up with three and a half hours left. The main characters aggravated me and I couldn’t listen anymore.

How many times does someone have to treat you like garbage before you finally say enough? Evidently, another 3+ hours worth. I wish that I could return the audio, but I don’t feel that it would be fair since I listened to over half.

Michael Dean did a fabulous job on the narration, as always, but the story itself left something to be desired!

Another amazing book

This was another amazing book from to amazing authors. Sloane Kennedy and Lucy Lennox have did it again. I've been interested in Lucky's story since he was kissed by Calvin in book 1. to see how much Lucky has grown and the pain that Zach has inside. on the flip side I have never wanted to strangle a character as much as I wanted to strangle Zach sometimes I love him, but I just wanted to strangle him and yell at him to pull his head out of his ass. after just recently reading all of the other books I can honestly say I think this one's my favorite. and of course the book wouldn't be complete without some awkward nudity with Aunt Lolly.

Can’t finish it. I will return it.

This book has almost no redeeming qualities. I usually love these authors but this one isn’t even close. In the earlier books lucky was sweet but fiery. In this one he is a doormat. And Zach is an abusive asshole. Oddly I got exactly as far as an earlier reviewer. 3 hours is the last straw.

Slow and repetetive at times... blah!

So there are parts that are great and then there are other parts where time just slows down.... there's also parts of the story that sounds similar from other parts. (not quite repetitive... but close enough). The same old same old of Lucky being abandoned.

You will love Lucky because he sees through words and actions. He's forgiving. He's compassionate. He's so young and naive.

Then there's Zack. He's been through so much that he's totally shut down and given up on relationships.

The story is about Lucky and Zack coming together. There are times when you'll want Lucky to walk away... then you'll get so frustrated that you'll want to walk away!!

The narration is simply amazing. I love all the voices portrayed in the book. Michael Dean does such a awesome job. Love the intimate scenes. hot hot hot!!

overall... blah

BREAK UP YOU IDIOTS!!!!

Oh hell no!! Lucky did not just call Zack "kind"!! And when asked how Zack treated him, did he seriously say "perfect"??? I didn't just hear that!

Ok, I'm a little annoyed at this book. It could've been a 5star, it really could've. 10star even. The writing was amazing. The portrayal of Zack's PTSD and C-PTSD were phenomenal! And Lucy's strength and bravery was so admirable.

Then it died. And dragged me to hell. And tortured me for eternity.

After the fire, when Lucky packed a bag, he should've gone home. he really should've. if he'd left then and they'd spent a few years apart growing as individuals, Lucky growing up and into a strong man, Zack healing after a boat load of trauma work, and then they reunite years later as better men (with some baggage, but better than before), this would've been the best book ever!!! They would've been together long enough to recognise their potential together, but they would also have recognised that they needed to heal themselves before they could be together.

As it was.... no! Just no!! Don't get me wrong, i empathise with Zack. I really do. But Lucky should NOT have put up with how Zack treated him! And he sure as hell shouldn't be calling Zack kind or thinking the way Zack treats him is is any way ok let alone perfect! that's called Stockholm Syndrome! Lucky's belief he can't live without Zack is particularly disturbing. Zack took advantage of Lucky because he was too messed up to stop himself, and never changed despite knowing what he was doing to Lucky was wrong. This is not romantic. It's tragic. a grand gesture doesn't change that!! grand guestures are easy. The little bit of happiness at the very very end won't last. five minutes of happy doesn't equal long-term change.

Boo!

Anyway, as you can tell, I'm a little upset. This book could've been so, so awesome if only the characters had broken up for a while (something I never ever thought I'd say) and fixed themselves up. I'm sending Lucky some info on domestic violence shelters right now.

*cries into pillow*

Great listen.

Enjoyed the book. First one I listened to with my partner. Now he knows why I enjoyed it. Narrator seemed to lose Zacs voice sometimes when jumping from Lucky to Zac. Overall still loved it.
