As the nation splintered into a civil war, Lincoln wielded his constitutional authority with an inspired wisdom and effectiveness. Author of the Emancipation Proclamation; “Lincoln’s Code,” which established laws of war; and the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln transformed himself into one of the greatest leaders and statesmen in American history.
