Die Morgenröte stand über dem Schlachtfelde, das die Trojaner als Sieger innehatten. Äneas richtete auf einem Hügel ein Siegeszeichen auf. Der Stamm einer riesigen Eiche, von dem alle Äste abgehauen waren, wurde mit der funkelnden Waffenrüstung des Feldherrn Mezentius bekleidet: rechts wurde der blutige bebuschte Helm, die zerbrochenen Speere des Fürsten, sein Panzer, der zwölfmal von Geschossen getroffen und durchbohrt war, aufgehängt; links der eherne Schild und an seinem Gurte das Schwert in der Scheide von Elfenbein. Der gesamte Haufe der trojanischen Führer drängte sich um das Denkmal, und Äneas weihte die Beute unter feierlichem Flehen dem Schlachtengott.
