***The record-breaking debut and instant Sunday Times Bestseller***

In a world ruled by necromancers, a woman with missing memories threatens the dark order that keeps her captive - and the man sent to break her. Gothic in tone, epic in scope - this debut is destined to become a modern classic.

Once a promising alchemist, Helena Marino is now a prisoner – of war and of her own fractured mind. The Resistance is crushed, her allies dead, her abilities suppressed.

The world she knew is gone.

Paladia’s corrupt guild families and their necromancer overlords, aided by vile undead creatures now rule - and hold Helena captive.

Resistance records claim she was a healer of little importance. Yet, Helena’s inexplicable memory loss makes her enemies wonder: Is she truly insignificant, or do her missing memories conceal the Resistance’s final secret?

To uncover the truth, Helena is delivered into the hands of the High Reeve – Paladia’s most feared and merciless necromancer.

Trapped on his crumbling estate, she must fight to protect what remains of herself and unearth the secrets buried in her mind, her prison, and her captor . . . whatever the cost.

Such a beautiful yet traumatizing story, narrator did an awesome job of getting all those feelings across

Loved everything about this book

You have to be patient to get to the story. Getting through part1 felt tedious and gloomy. Didn't understand the drag of depressing depictions and torture, almost dropped out of continuing. You have to get to Part 2 to really start the story.
It is so hauntingly beautiful. It is still gloomy and dark, with descriptions of war and hurt and torture. But Helena and Kaine's love story is exceptionally beautiful and unforgettable. It's the only brightness in the grey world of Palladia the author created.
Couldn't put it down once I got to part 2. Highly recommended book.
Unforgettable story. Love the main characters so much.

Heartbreakingly beautiful

The narrators voice is a thing of beauty and she uses it well to read a story so full of despair and yet also so full of love

Dark, desperate, devastating

- Cringeworthy scenes
- The story is just one person’s internal narrative - classic fan fiction style
- no world building, no exploration of the magic system, just brief, barely there touches
- repetitive lines
- for a book this long, there’s very little detail.

Still at the level of fanfiction
