For 15 years, author Stan Brock lived and worked in the savannas and rain forest of British Guiana, South America. Maturing among the Wapishana and other Amerindian tribes, Brock lived with the pain and suffering created by isolation from medical care. Volunteers are doctors, nurses, technicians, and veterinarians who go on expeditions at their own expense and treat hundreds of patients a day under some of the worst conditions possible. Volunteers have provided general medical, surgical, eye, dental, and veterinary care to tens of thousands of needy people and their animals, with 60 percent of the expeditions serving rural America.
