अमृतसर के जलियांवाला बाग में हुए हत्याकांड की पृष्ठभूमि पर लिखा यह उपन्यास उस समय के माहौल का अत्यंत सजीव चित्रण प्रस्तुत करता है। अप्रैल 1919 में अंग्रेज़ों ने रौलेट-ऐक्ट के ज़रिये भारतीय नागरिकों की हर किस्म की आज़ादी पर पूरा नियंत्रण करने की तैयारी कर ली। इस कानून के खिलाफ़ देश भर में विरोध हो रहे थे। 30 मार्च 1919 से 10 अप्रैल 1919 तक अमृतसर के लोगों ने ऐसा प्रतिरोध किया कि वहाँ के प्रशासन ने अमृतसर के लोगों को सबक सिखाने की ठान ली। 13 अप्रैल को बैसाखी का त्यौहार मनाने हज़ारों की तादाद में लोगों का जलियांवाला बाग में जमघट इकट्ठा हो गया। इन निहत्थे लोगों पर अंग्रेज़ों ने बिना कोई चेतावनी दिए गोलियां चलानी शुरू कर दीं जिसमें हजारों की जानें गयीं और हज़ारों लोग घायल हो गये। निर्मम क्रूरता ने वहाँ के लोगों के बसे-बसाये घर-परिवार एक पल में उजाड़ दिये और उनकी जिंदगी तहस-नहस हो गयी। देशभक्ति और अंग्रेज़ों के प्रति विरोध के जज़्बातों के बीच जूझता अमृतसर का आम नागरिक...। यही है इस पठनीय उपन्यास का ताना-बाना।
लेखक प्रोफ़ेसर रजनीश धवन मूलतः अमृतसर के निवासी हैं और कनाडा में यूनिवर्सिटी ऑफ फ्रेज़र वैली में अंग्रेज़ी विभाग में सह-प्रोफ़ेसर हैं। इससे पहले उनके कई नाटक कनाडा में प्रदर्शित हो चुके हैं। उन्होंने दूरदर्शन के लिए धारावाहिकों की पटकथा और संवाद लिखे हैं।
