About this listen

Oprah’s Book Club 2018 Selection

Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of both the American Dream and the New South. He is a young executive, and she is an artist on the brink of an exciting career. But as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to 12 years for a crime Celestial knows he didn't commit.

Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend, and best man at their wedding. As Roy's time in prison passes, she is unable to hold on to the love that has been her center. After five years, Roy's conviction is suddenly overturned, and he returns to Atlanta ready to resume their life together.

This stirring love story is a profoundly insightful look into the hearts and minds of three people who are at once bound and separated by forces beyond their control. An American Marriage is a masterpiece of storytelling, an intimate look deep into the souls of people who must reckon with the past while moving forward - with hope and pain - into the future.

Critic Reviews

"Narrators Eisa Davis and Sean Crisden skillfully portray Celestial and Roy.... In Part One, the narrators read the couple's letters so intimately that the listener may feel like an intruder.... As every wedding vow is tested, the narrators breathe intensity into Jones's riveting prose." (AudioFile)

Roy Hamilton had married a clever artist - Celestial Davenport (Georgia). She was an excellent and happy wife. Roy considered himself as the fortunate one. She was his angel, his divinity!
Roy went to Louisiana to visit his parents with his gorgeous wife on his arm. Celestial refused to stay there. Hence, Roy went to a motel with her to stay the night.
He was falsely accused of rape by a female guest in that motel. What a shock for them all! Celestial knew that Roy was a proper husband. One thing he certainly was—sincere. Yet, Celestial’s testimony fell on deaf ears. The police arrested Roy and he was sentenced to twelve years of imprisonment. Roy’s only support in this trial was his consciousness of innocence. Celestial’s uncle and lawyer Robert Banks worked hard for his release.
Andre and Celestial were old friends—they had grown up together in the same town—and they had much to say to each other. He was sweet on her.
After five years of confinement, Roy was triumphantly vindicated, and no one would dream of reproaching him now. Now, Celestial was placed in a very awkward position. Roy still loved her. Even with her halo so tarnished!
Love is a paradisal bird that can never be netted, it must fly by itself to the heart.

It's surprising how life takes turn in a completely unplanned and unexpected ways. It certainly defines you as a person, but also shapes the relationships and bonds you may form to sail through. This book is a sincere attempt by the author to narrate a story of such unexpected turn of events and its impact on the people involved. Roy, Celeste and Andre are certainly results of the situation but the way auther has brought their characters alive is commendable. Worth a read + audible experience is good.

Sincere story on life's curve ball!

The way the story oscillates in the last hour makes us wonder anout the human nature.
Only issue is the narration is too native for people from India to follow and comprehend easily
