About this listen

During the American Civil War, a man stands on a railroad bridge about to be hanged. At the last minute, the rope breaks - or does it? This much-anthologized short story was adapted into one of the most popular episodes of The Twilight Zone.Public Domain (P)1979 Jimcin Recordings Classics

Editorial Reviews

Despite being over 100 years old, the experimental sequencing and unexpected ending make "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" timeless. And with veteran narrator Jack Benson giving an animated performance, fans of any era will enjoy listening to this Civil War story from Ambrose Bierce. Perhaps Bierce's most famous story, Bierce tells of Peyton Farquhar, a Confederate sympathizer, sentenced to death by hanging for his efforts to disrupt the Union army. What follows, however, is an emotional and masterful look inside Farquhar's mind.

Critic Reviews

"Reminiscent of Poe's tales of horror and marked by an ingenious use of the surprise ending, a sardonic humor, and a realistic study of tense emotional states." ( The Concise Oxford Companion to American Literature)
