Publisher's Summary

Deadly competition. Deep desert. A dying tyrant.

Finn Harris was declared the Mage Guild's champion.

However, that was only the beginning of the Emir's competition. The next stage will send Finn and his companions deep into the desert north of Lahab in search of a long-lost relic. The magical artifact is said to be held within the Abyss.

Except, this time, he's not just facing novice mages. Everyone in the region seems to be arrayed against him, god and man alike. Racing against the other two champions, swept into the middle of a conflict between the Emir and those he's wronged, and at the mercy of a manipulative fire goddess, Finn must battle his way through the Abyss and claim his prize.

Yet he will not stop, and he cannot afford to fail - not with Rachael's life hanging in the balance.

He will need to embrace his gifts and overcome his past.

Finn will need to become a true prophet of the flame.

Nope, he did it again and ruined this book.

This is a really long book at 20 hours. I thought that would be a good thing with lots of interesting things happen. While there are a few things at the start, it quickly degrades into the two things that ruined this authors other books in awaken online. One: nothing happens for a large amount of hours, not in the book hours, but reading hours. Two: The story becomes a pity party, with boo hoo emo characters.

So "spoiler" alert, or really not since nothing happens, they spend more than 9 hours of listening time fighting ants. (that is the first thing) and during that time when they are not fighting ants they have gone the poor me route and act like 5 year old children. The MC is supposed to be old, smart beyond compare, and experienced. But he acts like a tween who just missed the Bieber concert. The entire 9 hours could have been done in two but it is dragged on and on and on and on.... You get to the point where when the chapter starts the pity party and flash backs you skip to the next one and you missed NOTHING. The only reason you listen to the chapter at all is that there is a journal entry of the mage guy at the start of each one, which is the only rather cool and interesting thing in those 9 hours.

If I can stomach getting through the "Here there be ants" (10 ish hours left and they are STILL fighting ants of boring) then maybe I will finish this book. But if Travis Bagwell can't chill on the poor me BS I just can't read anything more from him.

a complete miss for me

not too much to it.
I grew to dislike the main character quite easily. I found nothing admirable in him or even any reason to root for him...
Seemed to be way more exposition than needed, just make a shorter story.
No clue if it was the story itself, or the pacing, but the voice acting didn't help me enjoy this ride any more than I was.
Finished on Kindle.

Finn, Kyle and Julia do a dungeon dive. The end.

Nothing is resolved. A bit of levelling and that's about it. I was very disappointed. Should have been book 1.5 instead of 2.

Not as good as the 1st book

while the 1st one took us on a journey of character development and growth, this one just felt like monotonous grinding to level up. It felt like a stretched out dungeon crawl for the most part. and not in the old man next to a church "Stay Awhile and Listen" sort of way.

Disappointing

too much filler and does not progress the story enough, in my opinion. could have given the background faster and not dragged it out.

Plot hole as wide and deep as the Abyss!!!!

I am sorry to say not a fan of this story arc. Finn heavy reliance on his AI pet Daniel in game and over powered. No need to learn or pick up new skill, Finn gaining new ability is way to easy compare other in the story arc line. He just need to find away and code his way to victory.

Yeah not a big fan.

So damn good

I just love this book, and the series. Fin’s tail feels very different then the typical ascend online but very enthralling. I know I’ll wait 6 months for the next one but it’s worth it.

BIG FAT WASTE OF TIME

to be onset I didn't like the first book ether there was too much sulking about the dead wife and I'm not a big fan of the daughter or there whole relationship I mean isn't the MC super old because he just seemed like when he was an eight year old his parents didn't buy him a toy so now 20 years later he's still sulking, or something I'm sorry I'm really bad at metaphors,I mean couldn't the author just stay on the other awaken online series I mean that one at least started out well you know until the books became all about how unfair this game is, I mean at least normal video games blatantly let you cheat by paying for it but this one is all about how to get strong in this game you have to be a fu*king genius and if you are witch I very much doubt they get a city, its not like other people get a chance these guys are chosen by the gods when they first log in, and speaking of logging in what happened to the whole video game part I mean its like levels don't even really matter any more I am priti sure that has forgotten the mcs level and I don't want to be that guy but where did the diversity go a mean think back have you ever heard mention of someone yo know ETHNIC I mean at least other books have that one asian or black guy but I haven't found any in here, I'm pretty sure these books have been so boring that I must have missed one.
ps
I wish there was a recap because I forgot a ton of stuff from book 1,hey if there's a recap in book 3 then that would mean that the author actually reads reviews.

Give this Book a chance!

I think a few of the other reviews are a bit over dramatic, Is the story a little slow in the middle? yes but its still enjoyable. Its a good story with alot of depth, very diffrent from the main series but great non the less. The pacing is different from the first book but there is a good amount of progression and its fun slowly piecing all the parts of the mystery together until the final conclusion. The ending btw was great, definitely excited to see how the aftermath of this book leads to the finial one. I would recommend this book if you enjoyed the first, give it a try at least.

loving this world

when this extra spin off from the awaken online series started i was a little upset, feeling so invested in the other books I lamented having to wait for a continuation of that story arc.

after reading my mind was changed im enjoying this series just as much very well written and narrated i cant wait for the next book and the enevitable clash that is in the brewing as the two arcs converge.

Slower burner but wow what a finish!

This book started off slow but towards the end I was filled with so many emotions, I was satisfied with the ending but it made me hunger for more.

This series is superior to the original awaken online series, the side characters have developed interesting abilites and we (the reader) are finding out more information about the world.

A great addition to the story!

Flame is a great book and follows on from the story of Finn. Many twists and turns in his tale and very much worth the buy!

Not to his usual standard

I struggled with this. I found it boring and not up to the usual standard. I did like the ending and the way things came together but otherwise it was all very meh

over all very good but slow in parts

I for some parts very slowly and the foreshadowing was very heavy-handed.

but a nice addition to the main story and I am looking for to seeing, Fin's interplay with the main story

I quite liked the slower installment

Yes it isn't as young, hip and fast paced as the other books in this world. On a personal note considering that our main character is an older gentlemen I found this quite befitting. The main story is more young adult.

Now I would like to see the different worlds in this to come together into one cohesive story line.

Boring

I've listened to all the 'previous' Awaken Online and compared to them this one is dull. I had liked the other characters (Jason, Riley and Frank) but I couldn't feel any empathy for whatever the main protagonist is called in this off shoot. I have listened to both Ember and 50% of flame and just given up.

Ok

I liked the overall story but I have not been a big fan of these new books I enjoy the other ones better as I said they story is good but it's just feels drawn out with out knowing what's going on in the wider game or in the real world like in the other books with people checking forums watching the TV show or just logging out for that matter or what the games staff are dokng. the story can feel like it drags on and it's worse in this book it makes you feel like it's not a game or mmo at all no game systems are brought up rarely you don't even hear about his level ups or notifications they just don't exist it kinda defeats the whole point of it being set in a game instead of a standard fantasy story I hope this is improved in the next book but honestly I hope he goes back to the other story's soon.

I had to drop it

I was quite excited for release but what I got was something else.
The story was very monotone with no interesting twists and the narrator made it only worse. Literally no character development, It didn't even feel like lit-rpg. It's more like a kids story of how he fought a beetle somehow expanded to over 8 hours while could have been told in mere 15 minutes.
I also can't stand the protagonist, he's supposed to be hardworking and experienced man, not ignorant generic crybaby.
Imo it's time to stop with individual stories and move forward. The bigger picture about conflicts between gods and their avatars is the only saving for the series.

An emotional rollercoaster.

The characters pain feels real, the rational solid This series is more than expected, pouring emotion rather than just the struggle for power.
