About this listen

This is as much the story of Indian advertising as it is about India. Ad veteran Ambi Parameswaran looks at how advertising has evolved, reflecting the country's culture, politics and economy in the last 50 years.

From sartorial taste and food habits to marriage and old age, music and language to celebrities and censorship, Ambi examines more than a hundred ads to study how the Indian consumer has changed in the past five decades and how advertising and society have shaped each other.

Combining anecdote and analyses to give us a slice of modern history, Ambi evaluates the relationship between affluence, aspiration and desire in India. Exploring trends and impacts, he covers the ads that captured the imagination of the entire country. From 'Only Vimal' and 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan' to 'Jo biwi se kare pyaar' and the controversial Tuffs shoes campaign, the book is a memorable journey through brands, consumers and the world of advertising.

This is my professors book and what started as a course reading made me an addict! It’s more gripping than some fiction books too!

Amazingly written

Loved the Book. A trip down the memory lane of Ads in India. The book moves between an entertaining list of Ads to a book on India's Socio economic status in the last 50 years. Amazing..!!!

I'm tempted to write that the book "toh badi toing hai" to borrow words from the Amul Macho ad that was ooh-ed and ahh-ed a few years back. This book isn't one of those jargon spilling ones that try and intimidate the last reader who simply wants to experience the charm of advertising in India. There is history in there, a bit of having into the crystal ball, and a few relevant statistical references to give strength to an argument. The narration is just fine. Loved this one. - Arvind Passey - Blog: www.passey.info

Not just for the professionals in advertising

While the overall audio was quite enjoyable, the one fly in the ointment was the fact that the narrator hadn't bothered to figure out the right pronunciations for any of the tamil words- And there we write a few sprinkled through the book.

better tamil please!
