Cette belle nouvelle (ou court roman) paraît en 1882, alors que Pierre Loti est déjà célèbre par son talent.
Il s'était rendu dès 1869 en Algérie. Lors de son séjour de 1880, trois musulmanes lui rendent visite sur son bateau et lui inspirent ce conte, oriental par le rêve et la sensualité, mais marqué par la dure réalité de la vie.
La perfection du style ajoutée à ce mélange d'orientalisme et de naturalisme occidental font de ce récit un témoignage des plus intéressants sur l'histoire des rapports entre France et Méditerranée musulmane.
