The war between the Von Erichs and the Fabulous Freebirds keeps getting hotter, “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin finally makes his move toward championship gold, and Robb Helt and Scottie Wince welcome special guest, Steve Crawford to the show for Episode #13 of the Retro Wrestling Re-View WCCW Podcast.

This week finds World Class Championship Wrestling firmly in the aftermath of Christmas Star Wars. The Freebirds have made themselves the most hated men in Texas, Gary Hart is out of the territory, and the entire promotion is beginning to reshape itself around one feud that is rapidly becoming bigger than everything else on the card.

But before getting into the wrestling, Robb and Scottie introduce Steve Crawford, longtime Memphis Wrestling fan, territory wrestling historian, and BT’s co-host on the RWR CWA Podcast on Patreon. Steve grew up watching Memphis, ICW, and Georgia Championship Wrestling before eventually becoming familiar with World Class later in the decade. Now living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, he brings another old school territory perspective to this week’s watchalong.

And he picked a good week to drop in.

Jimmy Garvin is ready to wrestle on television, but only if David Von Erich gives him something worth showing up for.

Elsewhere, Wild Bill Irwin battles Johnny Mantell in a match that gets considerably more television time than anybody expected.

Then there’s King Kong Bundy, who is undergoing one of the most important transformations of his career.

The guys point out just how much more intimidating Bundy looks after shaving his head. He isn’t quite the enormous monster who will eventually main event WrestleMania against Hulk Hogan, but all the pieces are starting to come together.

With Gary Hart gone, Armand Hussain is filling the territory’s lead heel-manager role, including involvement with talent connected to The Great Kabuki.

There’s also a look at Iceman King Parsons, another wrestler who would become a major piece of World Class over the coming years. Robb talks about being a huge Iceman fan and shares memories of actually encountering Parsons at the Sportatorium years later, including finding out very quickly that yelling one of Iceman’s catchphrases at him is a lot funnier when Iceman doesn’t turn around and acknowledge you.

Then we get back to the reason World Class is really starting to cook.

The Freebirds and the Von Erichs.

Michael Hayes continues to show why he was so valuable to every territory he entered. Robb, Scottie, and Steve push back on the old criticism that Hayes “couldn’t work,” pointing out that wherever Michael Hayes and the Freebirds went, they drew money.

Georgia.

Memphis.

Texas.

And eventually Mid-South.

Hayes understood psychology, understood how to get heat, understood how to sell, and maybe most importantly, he understood how to make people want to see him get punched in the mouth.

That’s a pretty useful skill for a heel.

The real fireworks come when David and Kevin Von Erich collide with Terry Gordy and Buddy Roberts, you couldn’t book a hotter main event in Texas at that moment in time.

And coming out of that tag team match, Kevin Von Erich wants Terry Gordy in a match with NO RULES.

Be careful what you wish for Kevin…..
