How does a woman get the things many of us take for granted, like a bra that fits or period products when she has no access to them at all?
Dana Marlowe’s story starts in a lingerie store dressing room in 2015. She asked what to do with her old bras, and a sales associate told her, “Homeless women need bras.” Dana had no nonprofit background. Her first donation was 16 bras and some menstrual hygiene products. Today, her organization, I Support the Girls, has donated nearly 58 million bras and menstrual hygiene products to more than 5,600 shelters and social service agencies who serve women experiencing homelessness, poverty, and crisis.
In this episode of Humankindness at Work, Dana shares:
- How an “accidental activist” built a global movement without extra time, money, or expertise
- Why some needs, like menstrual products and bras, stay invisible, and how we change the conversation
- What happens when we give people a platform to do good
- Crystal’s story, and why a red lacy bra meant so much to her
Dignity shouldn’t be a luxury. If you’ve ever wondered how to make a difference when you don’t feel like an expert, this conversation is for you.
