On November eighteenth, nineteen seventy-eight, Congressman Leo Ryan’s investigation of Peoples Temple in Guyana turned into an armed attack at the Port Kaituma airstrip. Ryan, three journalists, and Temple defector Patricia Parks were killed as they tried to leave with residents who had asked for help. Back at Jonestown, Jim Jones called the community together. A surviving recording captures Jones directing a final gathering in which children and adults were poisoned, injected, and killed by other means. Jones died of a gunshot wound. The total across Jonestown, Port Kaituma, and the Temple’s Georgetown headquarters was nine hundred eighteen.
This episode reconstructs the final days through the House investigation, FBI records, diplomatic reporting, Deborah Layton Blakey’s sworn warnings, survivor testimony, Temple records, and the surviving death tape. It follows the residents who asked to leave, the delegation that tried to verify abuse allegations, the armed men who attacked at the airstrip, and the limits of what the surviving record can prove about individual choice during the final gathering.
The central question is not only how the deaths happened, but how a movement that attracted people with promises of racial equality, social care, and communal life became a system of isolation, discipline, and coercive violence.

YES OR NO: Should Jonestown be described primarily as mass murder rather than mass suicide?
