We usually hear about Ashoka’s remorse after Kalinga, but we rarely hear about the woman who stood beside him in those quiet years. In this episode, we explore the life of Karuvaki, a queen whose influence shaped the early Dhamma policies of the Mauryan Empire. While the Ashokavadana paints her as a figure of jealousy and cruelty, modern historians look at the archaeological record from Ujjain to find a more complex reality. We discuss how her son Dasaratha was positioned for succession and what that meant for the stability of the empire. We also examine the strange disappearance of Karuvaki from the historical record after the death of Bindusara and how her legacy might be tied to the medical reforms Ashoka later enacted. This is a story about power, gender, and the women behind the pillars. #Ashoka #Karuvaki #MauryanEmpire #IndianHistory #AncientIndia #Ujjain #Basaraja #Dasaratha #Dhamma #Ashokavadana #Divyavadana #Bindusara #ChandraguptaMaurya #Pataliputra #Sarnath #Lumbini #Kalinga #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
