Methamphetamine is now associated with addiction, psychosis, and international drug trafficking, but its origins tell a surprisingly different story. First synthesized in the late nineteenth century, this powerful stimulant eventually found its way into pharmaceutical products, military medicine, and everyday consumer culture. How did a substance once promoted for medical purposes become one of the world's most notorious illegal drugs? In the premiere episode of The Drug Files, we trace methamphetamine's transformation from a laboratory discovery to a global public health and criminal justice problem.
