The deadbolt unlocked itself and erased twenty-two minutes
In this episode, we follow two linked incidents at Sutter's Ford: a customs officer who cannot account for twenty-two minutes of her shift, and a retired ranch hand who finds a decades-old leather logbook washed up on a new sandbar. What connects the unlocked deadbolt, the missing time, and the sealed 1982 report?
Person: Melissa Bennett
Date: June 6-9, 2011
Location: Sutter's Ford customs house, Río Mesquite (Texas-New Mexico border)
Person: Melvin Allen
Date: June 7, 2011
- Melissa Bennett, a 28-year-old single-officer customs officer, logged a continuous handwriting gap of twenty-two minutes in her duty log and had no memory of that interval.
- For four consecutive mornings in early June 2011 Melissa found the customs house deadbolt unlocked with no signs of forced entry, no footprints outside, and no registered crossings overnight.
- Melissa had a record of punctuality and reliability: she volunteered sixty Thursdays in a row at a food pantry and had never missed until June 9, 2011.
- On June 7, 2011 Melvin Allen, a 61-year-old retired ranch hand, found a leather-bound logbook open and dry on a sandbar that had not existed eight days earlier; the last entry was dated June 14, 1982.
- Sharon Anderson, a 52-year-old independent researcher for the Crale County Historical Society, examined the book and noted its nineteenth-century oil-cured binding and a practiced hand in the 1982 entries, prompting a search for a sealed government report from that year.
