A child saw something in the rain. The town remembered it differently. When Mina Ford arrives in a quiet English town, she comes with one task: to examine an old witness account from the night a man drowned by the cut. The official story has long been settled. A young passer-by saw a man making his way home along the towpath in the rain. Nothing more. Nothing darker. Nothing left to disturb. But Mina’s work is to listen for the join between what was seen and what was later said. One sentence in the account sounds too finished, too adult, too smooth to have come from a frightened child. As she follows that sentence through noticeboards, guesthouse rooms, a launderette, an archive, a bus route, a church hall and an allotment plot, she begins to uncover a town held together by kindness, silence and carefully shared versions of the past. What begins as a quiet investigation into a witness statement becomes something far more unsettling: a study of memory, protection, guilt and the cost of making a frightened child certain of what she never truly saw.The Raincoat Witness is a literary mystery about testimony, moral responsibility and the dangerous comfort of a story that lets people sleep. Atmospheric, restrained and deeply humane, it asks what should happen when the truth belongs not to the person who finds it, but to the person who must live with it.©2026 William Gomes (P)2026 William Gomes
