In this episode of *Movies First*, Chris and Jessica explore the poignant film *Calle Malaga*, a heartfelt narrative that delves into the complexities of memory, identity, and the ties that bind us to our homes. The hosts dive into the character of Maria Angeles, portrayed by the talented Carmen Maura, who embodies the fierce determination of a 79-year-old woman fighting to keep her cherished apartment in Tangier amidst her daughter Clara's plans to sell it.

The conversation highlights the striking contrast between Maria Angeles's emotional connection to her home and Clara's practical approach, stemming from her own struggles. Chris and Jessica dissect the nuanced dynamics of their relationship, illustrating how Clara's desperation leads to decisions that clash with her mother's deep-seated memories and identity.

As they navigate the film's exploration of familial tension, the hosts discuss the significance of Maria Angeles's belongings, particularly her beloved record player, and the violation felt when Clara sells them off. They also touch upon the intriguing character of Absalom, the antique dealer, whose opportunistic nature adds layers to the story, and Josefa, the nun, who serves as a calming presence and confidante for Maria Angeles.

The stunning cinematography by Virginie Surdeige brings Tangier to life, enhancing the film's themes and making the city feel like a character in its own right. Chris and Jessica emphasize the film's powerful ending, which reflects the messy reality of life and the quiet victories we seek.
