सुब्रह्मण्यम् चन्द्रशेखर (१९१०–१९९५) हे एक भारतीय व अमेरिकन शास्त्रज्ञ होते. आधुनिक खगोलशास्त्रात त्यांचे काम मुलभूत आणि महत्त्वाचे मानले जाते. ताऱ्यांच्या उत्पत्ती कशी होते ते चंद्रशेखरांनी शोधून काढले. या कामासाठी त्यांना १९८३ चे नोबेल पारितोषिक मिळाले. शिवाय त्यांना पद्मविभूषण, ब्रूस पदक, व इतर अनेक पारितोषिके मिळाली.डॉ. चन्द्रशेखर यांची खरी ओळख म्हणजे 'चन्द्रशेखर मर्यादा'. ११ जानेवारी १९३५ या दिवशी डॉ. चन्द्रशेखर यांनी एक सिद्धांत मांडला. पुंजवाद आणि सापेक्षतावाद यांची सांगड घालून चन्द्रशेखर यांनी श्वेत बटूंची कमाल वस्तुमानमर्यादा सूर्यापेक्षा ४४ टक्के इतकी असू शकते असे आपल्या सिद्धांताद्वारे मांडले. यात सूर्यापेक्षा लहान असलेले तारे म्हणजे बटू तारे यांचे अस्तीत्त्व कशामुळे टिकून आहे हे गणीताद्वारे डॉ. चन्द्रशेखर यांनी मांडले.१९८३ साली त्यांच्या संशोधनाची मान्यता म्हणून डॉ. चन्द्रशेखर यांना जगातील सर्वोच्च समजले जाणारे नोबेल पारितोषिक देण्यात आले.©2020 Storyside IN (P)2020 Storyside IN
