Niet elk kind groeit zorgeloos op. Zoals Esmée, wier ouders gescheiden zijn. Haar moeder worstelt om haar eigen leven op orde te krijgen, terwijl haar vader een bedreiging vormt voor zijn dochters. Esmée zoekt houvast bij haar knuffelbeer, haar verbeelding, haar beste vriendin Arisa en haar oudere zus Nel.

Uiteindelijk vindt ze troost in een hardnekkig verlangen om te verdwijnen.

Kim Pauwels (1983) studeerde Romaanse filologie en cultuurmanagement. Ze is schrijfster en leerkracht Nederlands voor anderstalige jongeren. Haar dichtbundel Tweelingstrijd verscheen in 2017 en haar gedichten staan in de Poëziekrant en bloemlezingen zoals Dichter bij Beeld (2018), Zwemlessen voor later (2020) en Even zijn wij samen meer (2023). Blauwe achten is haar debuutroman.
