Publisher's Summary

They came for her family. Now she's coming for them. This nail-biting thriller introduces Glasgow's newest gangland mistress, Kerry Casey.

Kerry Casey thought she'd made a life away from the dirty dealings of her gangster family. Her father wanted to make them legit - her brother Mickey had other ideas, and now it's got him killed. When Mickey's funeral turns into a bloodbath at the hands of a group of anonymous shooters and Kerry's mother is killed in the crossfire, Kerry finds herself at the head of the Casey family, and desperate for revenge.

Running a crime empire is not a job she ever asked for, and not one she wants, but Kerry is determined to fulfil her father's wishes and make the Caseys go straight. First, though, she will find the men who murdered her mother, and she will take them down, no matter what it costs.

Fantastic

Really enjoyed this book, the first in a series. Can't wait for the follow on. Loved all the characters, good and bad. The descriptions really brought them to life, helped by the narrator, Reanne Farley. If you like Martina Cole, you will love Anna Smith.

Reasonable

To much swearing in it for my liking, didn't think it was necessary to this book

First Anna Smith book that I cannot read

"This is the first Anna Smith I cannot even finish"
I am so very disappointed with this book. I absolutely love the Rosie Gilmour books, OK there is SOME swearing in those but somehow more in context. With this book I am horrified in many ways:
1. The language is enough to make me 'swallow hard' in shock, the C word is very active, also the F word. I am not a prude but this is over the top.
2. I get the impression that the reader is expected to feel a sympathy and fondness for the Gangster Kerry who has taken over the Empire after the demise of her father and brother. She says 'My father was a gangster, but I am not ashamed!!! Well I think she jolly well SHOULD be.
3. There is evidence of a 'God fearing' upbringing, with the priest being a close family friend, and constant attendance at Mass, and reminiscences of First Holy communion etc. I hate hypocrisy.
4. Kerry sends out the hit men without a second thought in revenge for the killing of her mother at the father's funeral. We should remember that before she returned to take over the business she was a successful Solicitor!!
I am hating this book so much, I notice that the other 3 reviews so far have been 5* reviews. I have waited for an Anna Smith novel for some time since the last Rosie Gilmour, but THIS IS totally unacceptable.
The narrator speaks in a slow and deliberate way as if the listener is lacking basic understanding of the English language. I am feeling very cross at this book, more than I have ever felt about any book I have listened to, disappointed? yes, but cross? - never before.

Colourful language

This book is dreadful with regards the bad language, it’s not for the faint hearted. I think I’m quite open minded but I found this book a very hard listen and would not recommend it.

Not for me

l'm so disappointed, the main character was so unlikable, no sympathy for her whatsoever. Having read this author before i had high hopes, maybe the next one, unless it has Kerry as a main character.
