Really great romance story
I really liked this book, where the story was fresh for me and I really liked that it ties into the Vampire Academy books, with characters reoccurring, which was such a treat!
I really liked the narration as well!

Great characters
After the drama with Rose Hathaway, Sydney knows she’s skating on thin ice. Her fellow Alchemists have accused her of being a ‘vampire lover’ and she’s living under the very real threat of being sent away to a ‘re-education centre’. Worse yet, her actions may cause her sister to be dragged into the unsafe work of alchemy.
So when Sydney is apprised of a new assignment, she fights tooth and nail to be the one sent in place of her young and inexperienced sister, even though it means she’ll have to live with one of the ‘unnatural monsters’ she’s trying to protect the human world from. Secretly, Sydney knows that the gap between the Moroi and humans is smaller than she’s been led to believe. Living with Jill, the royal Moroi she’s been assigned to hide won’t be as bad as she thinks. It might even be fun, going to school and making friends. And nothing really happens in Palm Springs anyway…
After the Vampire Academy series, I think I expected Sydney to be similar in character to Rose, but I was pleasantly surprised. Don’t get me wrong, Rose is one of my favorite young adult characters, but a new series needs to have something fresh and exciting. Sydney is all that. She’s not your expected heroine. She doesn't fight, she wears suits and she’s altogether quite lady-like. Some would say, she’s a ‘good-girl’, perhaps even a ‘walk-over’…Yet there is a hidden strength in her blood. Sydney is the girl who can get her own back without breaking a nail or lowering herself to her opponents level. She’s all business on the outside. On the opposite end of the scale is Adrian: bad boy and party animal. United by their concern for their young charge, the two opposites team up, to make a surprisingly great team. The character development on the part of both characters is definite and heart-warming. It’s probably my highlight in this novel.
I enjoyed this story, and would like to find out what happens next, but I have to admit that it didn't enthrall me the way the Vampire Academy series did. Perhaps it was the lack of chemistry (excuse the pun!), the slower pace or the cliched feel of some of the interactions. Still a great read!
I wasn't a huge fan in the beginning of the narrator. She seems a little too forced, but she grew on me towards the end!

Amazing
Loved the book already and the narration just made it come to life again. The characters were amazingly consistent and their voices distinct from each other and in line with the canon of the book. Only one small gripe really... being British I found Adrian's "British" accent was uncomfortable, like someone mixing the English accents they knew into one and then lengthening all their vowels. *shudder* He is supposed to be posh but instead sounds like he is a bottom feeding con man. Apart from that the storytelling was exquisite.

Good spin off - better than the original series.
Any additional comments?
I'm a bit of a sucker (pardon the pun) for vampire fiction. I think that Richelle Mead has a great imagination and her ideas are original and well constructed.
I listened first to the Vampire Academy series, which I persevered with but found a little grating - the heroes being a little too stalwart and the villains a little too mean. The problem still exists in the spin off (which centres around Sydney from the original series), but the more complex character backgrounds and exploration make it more believable.
Again the writer's imagination in the plot development and depth of the supernatural world are the strong points of the series. The quality of the actual writing is what keeps it from being as good as the likes of JK Rowling. It is arguable of course that I am just too old to be reading teen fiction... however, I found that there were far too many cliches and a lot of slightly irritating repeated phrases. This is perhaps made more obvious by the narration, as the reader (naturally) always reads the repeated parts in the same tone and with the same rhythm. That isn't a dig at Emily Shafter, who I think does very well (although I will always prefer an English accent) with the material she's given. I also liked the alternative voices, given to Adrian and some other characters, which added to the quality of the listening.

Extremely damaging to girls images of themselves
I love these books, but I’m disgusted at the fact that Sydney thinks a size 2 is “huge” and that she feels frumpy and like she has to eat less. This is soo damaging to young girls, as if there isn’t enough pressure to be tiny already.

Good story...but could barely listen
The actual plot itself is fun and entertaining, although not up to the vampire academy series standard as of yet. The crucial flaw of this is the recording. The voice actor is fine until they attempt pitiful accents to differentiate characters- terrible RP English accents, mock Turkish accents that sounded like Count Dracula at times. These borderline offensive accents make it really hard to listen to when you’re not laughing at the bad attempts or angry at how distracting it is. I managed to block it out as much as I could to actually get through the story, but it took some effort.

Brilliant start to a series
I really enjoyed listening to this audio book although the narrator did seem a bit shouty with some of her characters....Abe in particular! But, it didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the story or the rest of the performance.
I am, however, very disappointed that I am unable to download Book 2 in the series! All the rest of the titles, up to Book 6, seem to be available but, Book 2 is only available in German. So, be warned, you will be missing a chunk out of the stories if you start reading this series!

great classic vampire academy story, accents were terrible and Adrian should have been classy and smooth, instead he always sounded like he was a yelling Australian. I think they were going for Brit but did not pull it off.

The voices/accents of the characters in this audiobook were just terrible. I think I would have enjoyed this book much more if I wasn’t so distracted by the cringe of my ears. I will be reading the second book.

Slow start but...
For me this book took awhile for me to get into as I found it difficult to like Jo much and really didn’t like Keith but once Adrian became more of a focus for ‘Sage’ I started to really enjoy it and by the end was looking forward to listening to the next audiobook.
