Verwandte, Honoratioren und markante Persönlichkeiten seiner Jugend werden integriert. Es ist die Geschichte des langsamen Niedergangs einer reichen Kaufmannsfamilie über vier Generationen hinweg. Gert Westphal liest diesen epochalen Roman in ganzer Länge.

Die ursprünglich ungekürzte Produktion wurde restauriert, indem die Stimme des 2002 verstorbenen Gert Westphal mit Zustimmung seiner Erben in sechs fehlenden Passagen digital nachgeahmt wurde, die insgesamt ca. acht Minuten der vollständigen Lesung ausmachen (siehe PDF-Datei).
