La battaglia di Montecassino fu una serie di quattro assalti degli Alleati lungo la Linea Gustav dell'Asse, con l'intenzione di aprirsi la strada per Roma. Furono scontri sanguinosi che causarono notevoli perdite su entrambi i fronti e distrussero gran parte della città e del patrimonio storico-artistico dell'area, compresa l'abbazia medievale che dominava l'area. A causa di incomprensioni e piani di guerra sbagliati, gli Americani bombardarono l'abbazia pensando che fosse occupata dai tedeschi, con 1400 tonnellate di esplosivo. Tragico esempio della forza distruttiva della guerra, la battaglia di Monte Cassino causò 55000 morti tra gli Alleati, mentre i tedeschi uccisi furono molti di meno, intorno ai 20000.
