Publisher's Summary
Have you ever wanted to solve a murder? Gather the clues the police overlooked. Put together the pieces. Identify the suspect.
Journalist Billy Jensen spent 15 years investigating unsolved murders, fighting for the families of victims. Every story he wrote had one thing in common - it didn’t have an ending. The killer was still out there.
But after the sudden death of a friend, crime writer Michelle McNamara, Billy became fed up. Following a dark night, he came up with a plan. A plan to investigate past the point when the cops have given up. A plan to solve the murders himself.
In Chase Darkness with Me, you’ll ride shotgun as Billy identifies the Halloween Mask Murderer, finds a missing girl in the California Redwoods, and investigates the only other murder in New York City on 9/11. You’ll hear intimate details of the hunts for two of the most terrifying serial killers in history: his friend Michelle’s pursuit of the Golden State Killer which is chronicled in I’ll Be Gone In The Dark which Billy helped finish after Michelle’s passing, and his own quest to find the murderer of the Allenstown 4 family.
And Billy gives you the tools - and the rules - to help solve murders yourself.
Gripping, complex, unforgettable, Chase Darkness with Me is an examination of the evil forces that walk among us, illustrating a novel way to catch those killers, and a true crime narrative unlike any you’ve listened to before.
With a foreword by Karen Kilgariff of My Favorite Murder.

COULD NOT STOP
This book was so captivating I wanted to call in sick to work the morning I started listening because I didn’t want to stop. I did go to work and still managed to finish in less than 24 hours. I was brought to tears from emotion during portions of the book but overall it was excellent. Billy Jensen has a great voice for audiobooks; I highly recommend this to everyone into making this sometimes dark world, a better place.

100% worth it
To preface this, I am not one for super critical reviews. I don’t care about structure or form or existential matters. Was it interesting? Informative? Did I enjoy it? Good enough for me.
I’m not a rabid Billy Jensen fan. Nor am I rabid true crime fan. I am a rabid justice for victims fan, so true crime listening and reading consumes a lot of my time. I often listen to it to see if there’s a better technique or idea to be applied in my real life occupation.
This is the writing of someone with empathy, but from as objective as a perspective one can have when they actually give a hoot (man I wish we could curse in reviews. Hoot doesn’t have enough emphasis). This is a narrative from the perspective of someone who wants to give a voice to the voiceless, with a focus not on the horrible things that people do, but the search for justice for people who have horrible things done to them. That difference in narrative is what makes this incredibly special. So often, articles leave you remembering the life history of a serial killer, but not so much as the names or faces of their victims. It’s also refreshing to hear a narrative that’s read and written by a person that is featured prominently in it, without any of the narrative smacking of self importance or pompous ego.
On an audio listening note - a lot of audiobooks just drone. This isn’t a lively radio show production, but I binged this in one sitting (I work long hours) and never once did I feel sleepy, bored, or irritated. Billy’s voice has personality without being corny, and energy without being obnoxious 6 hours in.
10/10 appreciated this, and am glad I spent the money.

Intriguing and Inspiring
Billy Jensen is an amazing human. Some may see his optimism for crime fighting as fanatical, but he gets real results through hard work and persistence. Incredible encouragement and guidance for others who may become the unsung heros our world needs.
Keep up the good work, Jensen!

Great!
I’m a murderino to the core, so that helps love this book. I think my favorite part is that the author reads the book. It doesn’t happen all that much and while he is reading it helps you connect with the material because he actually lived it. I cried I think 3 times. Slightly derailed my spring cleaning but it was worth it.

Any True Crime Fan will love!
Billy Jensen has done a great job on this book! I love his ability to mix true crime with the narrative of his life. Like many true crime fans, our fascination starts early! I love hearing the stories of his Dad and of Michelle McNamara. I am half way through this book now and will add more when I finish! I look forward to more of his work!

Phenomenal.
I started this book the afternoon of the release, was up until midnight listening, and IMMEDIATELY started listening again upon waking up. I'm probably going to start it again soon. Poignant and personal, Billy is obviously one of the good guys he states are so few in this true crime world.

The best True Crime- the focus where it should be
If you like Serial, Criminal, In The Dark, and other True Crime podcasts, this book is for you. Billy Jensen, spending his own time and money, uses social media as a force for good to help find murders, find missing people, and bring justice for the families of victims.
After you listen, subscribe to his podcast with Paul Holes, Jensen and Holes: The Murder Squad and become a part of the movement of citizen detectives.

Billy Jenson is a true modern hero
I never feel compelled to write reviews, but this book is incredible. Both Billy Jenson and Karen Kilgariff (who wrote and reads the foreword) have such compelling and emotive voices, and you can tell that this is something that took a lot of love and care to create.
I’ve been a fan of Billy’s work for a while, but this book gives such a thrilling overview of his life and work, it’s a must listen for any true crime fan. Listen to this and then try and tell me that you don’t want to go into the darkness and root out the monsters with him. I bet you can’t.

Tedious and self obsessed
Really did not enjoy this audiobook. Lots of different crimes are covered, but the narrative jumps around a lot, and so there is no building of suspense. Frequent deletion, chaotic chapter structure - seemed unedited. no clear story arc. The narrator/author comes across as quite narcissistic in places. Found the narration monotone and not engaging.

the 5 star reviews were right
I'm new to crime and thriller entertainment. i read The Golden State Killer and absolutely loved it. This is possibly even better , or just different in that it has a lot of variation in topics due to Billy Jenson's incredible life and rare attitude. I'm hooked, and will be reading his best friend's book I'll be gone in the dark. This book is absolutely incredible, he talks of things I rarely come across- a new angle on crime and catching monsters. What a heroic man.

Powerful and gripping - Loved it.
Ever since I heard of Billy Jensen, I have been glued to every word he says and this book has only strengthened that practise. An everyday humble hero, his story is inspiring and heartbreaking all at once. I hope 'Chase Darkness With Me' helps the ever growing backlog of cold cases and I look forward to reading/hearing his future work.

A Must Read
A true crime book worth listening more than once.
I have really enjoyed this book. I have just finished it and I am about to restart it as I always pick up more after the first listen.
It really does take you into his thoughts and how he feels at the time he is investigating the crime.
You see him at the beginning of his career and how awkward he is as he approaches people for the facts and you feel how uncomfortable he is.
Great read.

Over emotional and average
As someone who's read Michelle McNamara’s ‘I’ll be gone in the dark’ and listened to the podcast ‘Bearbrook’ I found this book an average to poor retelling of those fantastic stories interspersed with Billy Jensen’s overly emotional thoughts on everything. It Made me cringe more times than not. I understand that he’s sincere, I just found it a bit much. He’s desperate to insert himself into investigations and as much as he says he doesn’t want credit, I feel he does. I also find his invitation to ‘solve crimes’ with him, extremely irresponsible! Everybody has motives and they aren’t all good, nor are they all driven by honest, legal generosity!
This book wasn’t for me, Jensen lays it on extremely thick, with all the subtlety of a high speed crash.
Finally, it’s ‘Human’ not ‘Youman’.

Incredible Work Ethic
Nothing but admiration for the time, effort, money and intelligence Billy has put into his crime solving. The only criticism I have is that I found the stories jumped from one to the other too much. I found myself wondering what happened & who was responsible, not knowing whether we were going to come back to the case or not. As it happened we usually did, but I found myself getting the details of each case confused, and some cases weren't solved when the book was written although Googling since has established they were.
Amazing how much social media is now relied on despite the initial reluctance of the law enforcers & certainly Billy was the instigator of that probably preventing future crimes from being committed.

Fascinating take on the true crime phenomenon
Billy Jensen is an investigative journalist, a true crime enthusiast and a brilliant podcaster (Jensen & Holes, the Murder Squad - with Paul Holes who is mentioned in this book). He's invented a new way of solving crimes and finding missing people using crowd sourcing and geotagging. This is a really gripping, fascinating and satisfying listen as Jensen discusses cases he has actually helped to solve using this technique, crimes you will have heard of if you're a true crime fan. He also talks about Michelle McNamara, her book I'll Be Gone in the Dark, which he helped to finish after her death, and the Golden State Killer. If you love true crime and you'd love to help solve your "white whale" case, then this is a must listen!

There were moments when i cheered, lots of moments when i cried, and throughout i had goosebumps. I love audio books when it's the author reading the book. I feel like i ingest it more deeply. It's like listening to a friend tell a story, and Billy Jensen tells a mighty fine story.

I had recently listened to 'I' ll be gone in the dark'.
And that led me down the rabbit hole to this one.
I'll be reading some more true Crime.
It's gritty without being gruesome. And it's great to hear how everyday citizens are helping to get the bad guys off the street.
