K L Slater.. losing her touch unfortunately...

I am giving this book a VERY generous rating of 3/5 stars because I love the narrator, and because I would hate for someone to read a bad review about K.L. Slater books and think they are all awful. Because, they aren't. Except for this one. And the one before it..

I love K.L. Slater books. I salivate over them. She has such an awesome way of pulling the reader or listener into the story and twisting the plot with a 'SURPRISE' that you just might have seen coming, but probably not.. The 'SURPRISE' in this book was not at all one I saw coming, which is another reason for the 3/5 stars.

So- we have a great narrator, and a fairly good 'SURPRISE.' The problem is.. everything that lead up to the end wasn't good. At all.. In fact, it was confusing and unlikable and I wanted to slap every character in the book. Hard.

We have a busy paralegal (Ellen), her husband (Sean), and their 10 year old daughter. They have agreed to stay together for the sake of their daughter but live separate lives because they've fallen out of love. It's not too long before the Mr. falls deeply in love with a woman, who happens to be his wife's boss.

The wife's boss has her own daughter who is the same age as Ellen's daughter. Ellen's daughter is thrown into a serious conundrum when dad starts dating her friend's mom of course- but then things take a really implausible term. In fact, the story line was so ridiculous and stupid, it was actually hard to finish the book. And the ending.. it would have been ok.. but then Slater adds an additional 'SURPRISE' to the already-shocking moment and it's soooo... dumb.

For those who have never read Slater, please don't start with this book. For those who have, you might want to skip this.. unless you are a die-hard fan like me. (Then again, if she keeps publishing this quality of psychological fiction, even the die-hards will wean off)

Advice to Slater- please quit trying to crank out so many books in such a short period of time. Your fans will wait. Sometimes, good things happen when we wait... (Just a suggestion, of course.)

Slow in the beginning then too fast at the end

The book wasn’t full of twists and turns until the end. At times, it felt a little slow. I wish that the author would have gone deeper into the “why” - it was obvious but feels like the story ended too soon.

Every book I listen/read it gets more exciting and suspenseful, I cannot believe the ending of this one. Wow! Anybody really looking for a book you don't want to put down, this is it. Looking forward to keep on reading all your books. The narration is excellent.

The Closer to the 💓Ending

Lucy Price-Lewis voice is great and impacts how the listeners invocks the experience in the five senses of truly enjoying this audio-book. However, I now after finishing this novel feel as if I have been left unsatisfied after a much awaited sexual encounter... I am so hopeing K.L Slater does not intend to leave fans feeling high and dry? ....

This novel is unfinished and should have given the listeners a glimpse of the real endding?

Ridiculous Story

Reading this book was like eating a half-baked cake! The characters, weren't fully developed or relatable. The story was predictable and was much more like a public awareness advert for eating disorders. I thought it would never end and when it finally did alll was left hanging which is a fad that the smart thriller writers aren't using anymore. I don't think I liked or related to any of the characters and the story was just plain boring. Don't waste your credits on this one!

So Disappointed

I read all of her other books and this was the last one. Some were good and some were okay, but this one... what a horrible ending, if you could even call it that. I wish I wouldn't have spent the money on this book, to be honest.

just ok

I thought the story was good until the ending. I don't even know what to say about it other than it was not worth the time spent listening. I usually enjoy this author very much but this was a miss for me.

Predictable

I’ve really enjoyed other books by this author but this lacked suspense and I felt no connection or sympathy for any of the characters. Most disappointing.

Rolled my eyes

Slow and the main character seem to repeat herself a lot and I found myself getting impatient with the story line. Slight twist, which could have lead to something good but book ended

Ending felt rushed

I have read lots of KL Slater books and was enjoying this. Then the ending happened out of the blue. It felt very rushed so I was a little disappointed.

Disappointed

I have really enjoyed the last two K L Slater books but unfortunately was disappointed with this one. I found the storyline frustrating with both parents failing to support their daughter throughout and the ending was abrupt and not very believable. I have loved her other books but this one wasn’t for me.

Not as good as other KL Slater books :(

was slow to start and Lucy Price-Lewis not as good as usual, although I can't put my finger on it, think it was a bit hurried. Usually live KLSlater but this one just wasn't as good as some of her others.

This was good, but because I am familiar with K.L Slaters other books and how tricky she can be, I did work out who the villain was .

Good Book club book

This is an interesting story and I didn’t work out exactly what was happening until it happened. I had to re listen to the chapter where it all came together as it happened so fast.
It created quite a debate in book club.
I really enjoyed it.

Half relationship drama, half thriller, quite average overall

I didn’t much like any of the main characters, although Emma wasn’t actually unlikable, just a bit frustrating. Having purchased the book because it was billed as a psychological thriller and rated highly, I found the first half to three quarters not that enjoyable, as it was all about a tortuous bickering separation. I kept waiting for the thrilling bit to start.

It did improve in the second half but overall the book wasn’t to my taste. Part relationship drama, part thriller, it almost seemed like two separate books and neither was that engaging. There was too much explaining. Rather than telling the story through the characters’ actions and words, with a few thoughts, the constant internal monologuing made it drag for me.

I did enjoy the narration, Lucy Price-Lewis is great. I don’t think I would have finished the book if it was a print book but her reading made it more enjoyable.
