This acclaimed new translation of Dostoyevsky's 'psychological record of a crime' gives his dark masterpiece of murder and pursuit a renewed vitality, expressing its jagged, staccato urgency and fevered atmosphere as never before. Raskolnikov, a destitute and desperate former student, wanders alone through the slums of St. Petersburg, deliriously imagining himself above society's laws. But when he commits a random murder, only suffering ensues. Embarking on a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a suspicious police investigator, Raskolnikov finds the noose of his own guilt tightening around his neck. Only Sonya, a downtrodden prostitute, can offer the chance of redemption.
Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) was born in Moscow and made his name in 1846 with the novella Poor Folk. He spent several years in prison in Siberia as a result of his political activities, an experience which formed the basis of The House of the Dead. In later life, he fell in love with a much younger woman and developed a ruinous passion for roulette. His subsequent great novels include Notes from Underground, Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Demons and The Brothers Karamazov.
Oliver Ready is Research Fellow in Russian Society and Culture at St Antony's College, Oxford. He is general editor of the anthology, The Ties of Blood: Russian Literature from the 21st Century (2008) and Consultant Editor for Russia, Central and Eastern Europe at the Times Literary Supplement.

Best translation on audible – mediocre narrator
As far as I can tell, every other unabridged English translation on audible is the inferior one by Constance Garnett. Now, I don't have the same anti-Garnett bias that others do, and I can admit that her translations of Chekhov and Tolstoy are quite good, but Dostoevsky is too chatty for Garnett's British formality.
That's why this audio book release is worth celebrating! Oliver Ready's translation is appropriately tough and unpretentious, while still maintaining the intellectual vigor of the novel. Thus, I'd say if you're looking for a Crime and Punishment audiobook, go with this one.
Unfortunately, Don Warrington's narration is hit-or-miss, though he gets better as the book goes along. My guess is that Mr. Warrington is a talented actor who is new to audio-book narration, as his voice conveys tone and is suitably emotional, but he doesn't have enough vocal variety to distinguish from the characters and his tone is too flat for such a gritty work as Crime and Punishment. Overall, it's a shame that Penguin didn't go with a better narrator, but this is still worth listening to if you'd like to read such an important novel in a good translation.

I wasn't even able to listen to an hour of this. It was just awful, muttering and hard to understand what he was saying!

Very good book
Excellent story, very deep and ideas about the arrogance of the individual. The writing did not age well, but I suppose that is true for all classics.

Well....
Well... I’m glad I read it, and parts were very deep and complexly satisfying. However, I don’t think I would recommend it. Throughout the entire story, I found myself undulating between loving it and wanting to read everything Dostoevsky, (as this book was my first), and hating it, feeling like it would never end. Part of me still does have a hunger to pursue more Dostoevsky, but I’m not sure what makes it so! 🤨🤣

A crucial text, but...
...Dostoevsky must have been paid per word. And reviews here must be a certain number of words. Raskolnikov laughed. Then burst into tears.

I get it now.
I have known about this book my whole life and had the impression of it being a dusty old tomb meant for a different time. a different world. How wrong I was. The truth I found here surpasses anything I've found in the crisp new pages of all the crisp new fad-driven books I've ingested for the sake of conversation. This one was for me, and me alone. My heart was lifted to lofty heights of humor and then pulverized. God help me be a man.

A masterpiece performed by a marvelous reader
The first few words uttered by Mr. Warrington immediately transported me to the vibe and scene of the story. Don Warrington is a great voice talent, capable of effortlessly carving out distinct figures with all their characters and personalities.
I used to assume Crime and Punishment is great but dull or inaccessible. Mr. Warrington’s rendition now proves how wrong I have been.
Brothers Karamazov is my next book to explore. Unfortunately, I haven’t come across a version featuring Don Warrington.

Fantastic voice
I thought ‘getting through’ one of the greats was going to be a chore, but this book is exceptionally gripping and narrated with a voice like chocolate

The narrator was brilliant...the story of course is brilliant..not sure if the Audio book was even better than the paperback.

A classic
This considered one of the greatest novels of all time. I found it a little hard to follow at times but it had some captivating moments. Audible needs to add chapter titles.
