Er berichtet von seiner armen, aber glücklichen Kindheit in Galizien, von seiner Begeisterung für das Theater, seinen Aufbruch nach Berlin und die Anfänge der Schauspielerei bei Max Reinhardt. Auch über die Zeit als österreichischer Soldat und als Schauspieler in München erzählt er. Den Roman hat Alexander in seinem amerikanischen Exil kurz vor seinem Tod im Jahr 1945 geschrieben.
