Where’s this author been?? I need more Benedict Ashforth ASAP
I’ve recently downloaded Audible because I love listening to audiobooks. There’s a collection of Audible Originals and other “free” audiobooks that come with the membership, which I appreciate, but it’s slim pickings. Sometimes you’ll get lucky and find some hidden gems.....Benedict Ashforth is one of them.
This is the second book I’ve read (listened to) by this author. The first was Abbot’s Keep: a short ghost story, which was creepy AF! And then, this awesome collection of short stories. Both were dark and eerie and very enjoyable.
The narrators for both books did a PHENOMENAL job! They exceptionally portrayed the frightened characters, so much so, they had me shaken up.
Especially, while sitting outside in the cold, dark night while a man pulls up in his car, sits there for a minute before saying (in a low, monotone voice):
~ “Hiiiii....(drawn out)...I’m David. Yeah...I live just down the road. *long pause* Yeah...I see you out here a lot and I’ve been wanting to say hi...*LONG PAUSE*”
~ ME: “Oh, okay. Hi! I hope you....” The guy abruptly drives away....I couldn’t even complete my sentence.
It was FU€KiNG WEIRD!!!
After listening to this haunting book and then experiencing the creepy introduction of a neighbor on a cold dark night......I was completely SHOOK UP and frightened! And in my mind, I’m thinking....I want to read more by this author! 😅

Very nice
Good stories, competent readers: A nice selection of stories with differing modes in the ghost/horror range. The one about fois grass eg, though one can guess the outcome fairly easily, is nicely written and read.

5 Superbly Narrated Creepy Tales
I have now read all of the books by this author that I could find. It is a shame that there are so few. Mr. Ashford has a gift for gothic ghost stories, his prose is incredible and he is able to build tension and atmosphere in a way many authors cannot. He understands that the suggestion can be more effective than gore. This book contains 5 amazing creepy tales. I highly recommend you grab the audio book version, read by a set of highly talented narrators that bring these tales alive. Simply superb. If this is your first, be sure to get his other works, equally thrilling.

Great spooky stories!!!
I was not expecting much from this, as I was unfamiliar with the author, and had only happened to come across this title in my list of Audible recommendations. But I’m so glad I decided to give Ashforth a try! The stories are deliciously spooky... I admit I felt a tingle along my spine more than once while listening to these five fantastic narrators... and I was not disappointed in the slightest. In fact, I plan to seek out more of Benedict Ashforth’s work and I won’t feel sorry at all paying good money for it. If you enjoy spooky stories, give this author a try!!! :-D

Good stories, great performances
Jilly Bond's performance was amazing. The stories were good. They're similar in creepiness to M. R. James's stories. I look forward to more of Ashforth's work.

A delightful collection of eerie tales
The tales are suspenseful and unsettling (in a good way). And being short, they are fast-paced. The narration for each one is excellent.

Great “Hitchcockian” style tales!
I grew up in a family that loved tales of horror and suspense. In my opinion, the very best horror stories are not filled with revolting descriptions of blood and gore. The best are those that make you feel uncomfortable and a little worried as to the possibility that the story was actually TRUE. I loved these stories because that’s exactly the way I felt! (My mother would’ve read these to me before bed each night...if the had been available to her)😀😳

Good old fashioned creepy fare!
Love it when the stories are dark and a little shocking and memorable…..but most of all….SCARY! I’ll probably listen to this one many times over in the years to come.

Wonderfully creepy
Atmospheric build up and aged story telling that takes you back to the past. Very clever writing - fantastic narration too!

Great short stories
I've listened to a few books by Ashfort now and I have to say he's become one of my favorite short horror stories writers. He has skill, the stories are sufficiently creepy and are all short enough to be easily digestible. With that they are a perfect listen for when you're in the mood for something spooky, but do not want to spend days on end listening to bleak terror.
It's hard to review books like these (mystery/ghost/horror) without spoiling the whole thing. But in general almost all of the stories of this writer are set in modern times, yet have the same feel as for instance MR James stories, or older gothic literature in general. Children often play a large part. They also often draw back on events in the past (sometimes hundreds of years earlier).
All in all I heartily recommend a listen, especially now that they are on plus. The narration is good too.

Surprisingly good as hard to please me!
I enjoyed these almost dark hypnotic tales. They had a classic style that felt contemporary unlike so many modern chilled tales. I will look out for more from the author...

Unsettling and creepy
These stories are creepy rather than outright scary, relying on building atmosphere and unnerving situations rather than outright gore, which is just up my street. The Westhoff Version is one that will stay with me for quite a while! The performances were as varied as the stories, and was great to listen to while working. I'm off to check out some more of Benedict Ashforth's work.
