Adolf Loos (1870 - 1933) war ein österreichischer Architekt, Architekturkritiker und Kulturpublizist. Er gilt als einer der Wegbereiter der modernen Architektur. "Das Sitzmöbel" ist ein Aufsatz, der erstmals in der "Neue Freie Presse" am 19.6.1898 veröffentlicht wurde: Das Otto-Wagner-Zimmer - das moderne Schlafzimmer und Bad in der Kunstgewerbe-Abteilung des Gewerbevereines - ist schön, nicht weil, sondern obgleich es von einem Architekten herrührt. Dieser Architekt ist eben sein eigener Dekorateur gewesen. Für jeden anderen ist dieses Zimmer unrichtig, weil es seiner Eigenart nicht entspricht, daher unvollkommen, und daher kann von Schönheit nicht mehr die Rede sein. Das ist wohl ein Widerspruch.
