Publisher's Summary

The first in a brand new cozy series from Diane Kelly set in Nashville - where the real estate market is to die for.

WILL THIS KILLER DEAL LEAD TO A DEAD END?

Meet Whitney Whitaker. A hopeless romantic when it comes to real estate, she knows what it takes to find - and flip - the home of one’s dreams. A fixer-upper is like catnip to Whitney: she can’t resist the challenge of turning an eyesore into a priceless work of art. So when one of her clients decides to liquidate a crumbling property, Whitney seizes the opportunity to purchase it for a song. But soon a curious incident of the cat in the night-time leads to a change in tune....

Sawdust is the name of Whitney’s cat - of course. Whitney’s passion for gut-renovation may be a mystery to him, but one thing Sawdust knows for sure is this: Dead bodies don’t belong in flower beds. So why is there one in this new, albeit old, house? Now it’s up to Whitney, along with the help of hot-and-cold Nashville Police Detective Collin Flynn, to find the truth about what happened before the mortgage property forecloses and Whitney loses her investment...and maybe her own life.

Loved the characters!

This book was so good. The characters were well developed and I feel like I really got to know them. There was just enough mystery to keep it moving quickly and made me want to keep listening. The narrator was a little hard to listen to at first but as the story went on, her voice began to fit each character more and more. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Start of a fun new series

I love the premise of this series.. as usual Ms. Kelly does a wonderful job in bringing the characters alive. I especially love how the start of some chapters are from Sawdust’s point of view including the robotic vacuum aka demon, which just has to make you laugh. If you’re not familiar with her writings she’s done the same thing in other stories (having an animals point of view) and it’s part of the charm. I also thoroughly enjoy the fact that the main female character knows how to use a toolbox. I cannot wait till the next one is available. I wish it was available today because I would definitely buy it!!

Enjoyable Cosy Debut

This is a light and fun cosy mystery with a home renovation touch. Nothing profound and no deep character development, but enjoyable.

A few small complaints kept me from giving 5 stars. The cat's occasional narration felt more contrived than necessary to the plot. The lack of a Southern accent in the few sections that aren't first-person narration or speech by characters felt odd since they all had accents. And though I'm not from the American South so I can't really judge, it sounded to me as if the narrator was affecting the accent. (I'd be interested to hear what Southern listeners think.) Finally, as a home renovation show fan, I'd hoped for more of those touches, but other than a few mentions of things like knob and tube wiring and quart countertops, not much of the renovation process was described.

Those are all small things, though, that didn't prevent me from enjoying the book.

I liked it overall

The series certainly has potential. I do not get the cat chapters at all, and I love cats in mystery novels. But Sawdust has his own little chapters for no good reason. Whitney is an interesting character though. I will get the next one, due in May.

Great!!!

And no colorful language! My Mom would even enjoy listening to this story and she hates mysteries.

Great characters, smart and impressive writing. Characters you want to know. The pets are precious and add to the story. Happy to have found this book.

Unfortunate narration

I enjoy this author, and have happily read her IRS and Dallas PD series. The narration on each of them is spirited and fun. Not so w this book. The narration takes the joy out of the story. The pace is plodding, the characters unremarkable. I have not returned an Audible purchase in years, but I had to send this one back. I would rather read it than hear the tortured audio version.

Great first book in new series big thumbs up!

I am a very big fan of her paw enforcement series! I haven’t been a cat person very much, but I am dedicated to buying the series as well! Sawdust was awesome! His personality was way different from Bridget in her paw enforcement series! I loved Whitney and all the main characters! I’ve warmed up to them immediately! I can’t recommend this new book highly enough! I will have to give it more than five stars because it really exceeded my expectations.

No

I'm glad I didn't have to pay for this book. It was boring with flat characters and a slow moving plot. I also found it odd that some of the chapters were from the point of view of a cat.

A great read

Thoroughly enjoyable cozy mystery. Loved the characters too. Sawdust the cat and the robotic vacuum cleaner added a delightful humorous touch.
