Das Raumschiff Odyssee entdeckt auf ihrer Reise durchs All einen potentiell bewohnten Planeten. Beim Anflug wird das Sternenschiff aber plötzlich und völlig ohne Anlass beschossen. Die Beschädigungen fallen dabei so gravierend aus, dass es nur noch mit Mühe und Not auf einem nahegelegenen Asteroiden notlanden kann. Bald stellt sich heraus, dass die Odyssee zwischen die Fronten zweier kriegerischer Parteien des Planeten geraten ist. Trotz aller diplomatischen Bemühungen scheitert jeder friedliche Vermittlungsversuch und sie bekommen ein Ultimatum gestellt: Wenn das Raumschiff bis zum Ablauf einer viel zu knapp bemessenen Frist das Planetensystem nicht verlassen hat, wird es endgültig vernichtet. Fieberhaft beginnen die Reparaturen im Wettlauf gegen die Zeit. Wird die Reise der Odyssee schon mit ihrem zweiten Fremdkontakt ein jähes Ende nehmen?
