 Hugo von Hoffmannsthal hat diesen "Brief" im Jahr 1902, als er 28 Jahre alt war, verfasst. Dieser Brief wird von dem 26-jährigen Lord Chandos an dessen älteren Mentor Francis Bacon geschrieben. Darin berichtet er über eine 2-jährige Schreibpause, die ihn nach der Beendigung seines hochgelobten Frühwerkes heimgesucht hat und unüberwindbar scheint. Deshalb beschließt er, das Schreiben ganz aufzugeben und sich anderen Aufgaben zu widmen.
