In den Katakomben von Buchhaim erzählt man sich die alte Geschichte vom sprachmächtigen Bücherdrachen Nathaviel, den kein Buchling je gesehen hat. Die Legende sagt, der Drache sei die Belesenheit selbst. Der kleine Buchling Hildegunst Zwei, benannt nach dem zamonischen Großschriftsteller Hildegunst von Mythenmetz, macht sich eines Tages auf den Weg in den Ormsumpf, wo der Drache hausen soll. Für diese Mutprobe muss er zum ersten Mal seine geliebte Heimat, die Lederne Grotte, verlassen. Er wagt sich in Bereiche der Katakomben, in denen es von Gefahren nur so wimmelt, und ahnt nicht, dass die größte Gefahr vom Bücherdrachen selber ausgehen wird.
