Nicolas Hollmanns Überraschung könnte nicht größer sein. Sein 1974 nach Portugal ausgewanderter Onkel Friedrich hat ihm ein Weingut hinterlassen. Das Erbe ist jedoch an eine Bedingung geknüpft: Der 30-jährige Architekt soll das Weingut selbst führen. Nicolas, der weder etwas von Weinbau versteht noch Portugiesisch spricht, nimmt die Herausforderung an. Auf der Quinta do Amanhecer, wo die ganz großen Portweine wachsen, heißt man ihn nicht gerade freundlich willkommen. Nicolas lässt sich jedoch nicht beirren. Beharrlich lernt er alles über die Herstellung und den Vertrieb von Portwein. Bis er in der Bibliothek seines toten Onkels einen Brief entdeckt: »Lieber Nic, finde meinen Mörder …«
