Apia, 1902: Die adelige Familie von Bahlow kommt aus Potsdam in die Kolonie Deutsch-Samoa, um dort einen Neuanfang zu wagen. Während der ehrgeizige Karl von Bahlow davon besessen ist, sich als Pflanzer einen Namen in der Kolonie zu machen, erleben seine Frau Rosa und die drei Töchter Grethe, Helene und Martha den Umzug in die neue Heimat auf ihre ganz eigene Weise. Die fremdartige Kultur der Südsee verändert jede der vier Frauen, beschwört schicksalhafte Begegnungen herauf und zeigt ihnen den Zauber der Liebe, während sich die Ereignisse schließlich überstürzen und im Ausbruch des ersten Weltkrieges gipfeln, der alles auseinanderzureißen droht.
