In einer bedeutenden Stadt meines lieben Vaterlandes, Deutschlands, lebte vor vielen Jahren ein Schuster mit seiner Frau schlicht und recht. Er saß bei Tag an der Ecke der Straße und flickte Schuhe und Pantoffeln und machte wohl auch neue, wenn ihm einer welche anvertraute; doch musste er dann das Leder erst einkaufen, denn er war arm und hatte keine Vorräte. Seine Frau verkaufte Gemüse und Früchte, die sie in einem kleinen Gärtchen vor dem Tore pflanzte, und viele Leute kauften gerne bei ihr, weil sie reinlich und sauber gekleidet war und ihr Gemüse auf gefällige Art anzubieten wusste.
