Jeremias und sein Drache Feuerschatten wurden von den Clans verstoßen. Auf der Suche nach einer sicheren Bleibe treffen sie auf Buckel und Ash, die sie bei sich aufnehmen. Die beiden erzählen von einem protzigen Ritter, dem Goldenen Gilbert, der von Dorf zu Dorf zieht, um im Kampf gegen Drachen seine Hilfe anzubieten. Als kurz darauf eine Mönchshaube die Festung des Murray-Clans in Brand steckt, erfährt Jeremias, dass auch die Clans den Ritter anheuern wollen. Doch Jeremias spürt, dass hier etwas faul ist. Gemeinsam mit seinen Freunden muss er verhindern, dass die Clans all ihr Gold an einen Tunichtgut opfern. Doch wer wird ihnen glauben, wenn ihnen niemand mehr vertraut?
