Der Deutsche Marc Hoffmann macht einen Motorradurlaub in Irland. Das Schicksal will es, dass es ihn nach Ballydesmond, einem Dorf im Süden Irlands, verschlägt. Dort lernt er die ausgesprochen attraktive Witwe Clare O’Reilly kennen. Eine Irin mit feuerroten Haaren und einem ausgesprochen traurigen Leben. Sie erzählt ihm die tragische Geschichte über den brutalen Tod ihres Mannes und dass die Dorfbewohner sie trotz gerichtlichen Freispruchs für die Täterin halten. Dennoch kommen sich Marc und Clare schon sehr bald näher. Aber diese Beziehung steht unter keinem guten Stern. Offenbar meint es die Vorsehung nicht gut mit Clare O’Reilly, denn die dramatischen und blutigen Ereignisse von damals sind auf dem besten Wege, sich zu wiederholen.
