Really disappointing, despite being a favourite.

It's a terrific book but the narration is so grating, I'm struggling to listen. Admittedly, I know these characters and the story so well, that I can anticipate what the next few words will be, so I'm a tough crowd. Nevertheless, Leonie is voiced with a totally British accent despite being French, which makes the French exclamations and non-English sentence structure sound absolutely bizarre. The intonation for other characters is really peculiar. Vidal could not sound less attractive. The women are incredibly shrill. I find myself voicing much of the book out loud myself to set my head straight - the whole sense of many a situation is lost because the text is read with such misplaced emphasis. In fact only the reading of Rupert, a terrible old ham himself, is bang on the money.

I'm sorry if this upsets the actor voicing but If I could return it, I would.

I'm going back to paper books for Georgette Heyer, I've lost all confidence in Audible for this author. Seriously, read Devil's Cub, don't listen.

Fabulous. Heyer at her best!

Highly amusing romance following the escapades of the Duke of Avon and his son and the Alistair family. I love a dark and suave villain with a soft heart. Well read exciting narrator.

Leonie doesn't have a French accent!!

I loved this in spite of the narrator. I felt he had no knowledge of this book or These Old Shades before recording. Leonie is decidedly English and brash, the voice given to her makes her sound cattish or disagreeable, whereas her voice in These Old Shades makes her a much more likeable character (and actually French).
I also found that a lot of the characters would end their sentences an octave higher which could make it seem stilted or confusing.
Sometimes the female characters voices are interchangeable, again not ideal. The narrator spoke at such an unnecessarily rapid pace sometimes that it made listening to this uncomfortable.
It's a brilliant story but on this occasion to really appreciate it you need to read the book.
This audio fails big time, if I had not read the book and loved Heyer anyway, I would have given up by chapter 1.

The Devil’s Cub

Quite one of my favourite Heyer books. Well read by Michael Maloney and most enjoyable. I am so very pleased to find that Heyer is once more being given attention. I really hope that eventually this title and These old shades will be filmed. Wit and wordage to delight in every chapter.

At last, a much much better narrator.!

I have been waiting for years for Audible to get someone else to read this. Michael Drew was pretty awful at Vidal's voice, I switched off after the first sentence. Michael Maloney done a cracking job with all voices. Georgette would have been pleased.

A perennial favourite

Written, more than half a century ago and still the benchmark for Regency romances. No sex needed to sell. Narration was quite acceptable
