Als der Ornithologe Brar seine Stelle auf Südfall antritt, ahnt er nicht, dass sich sein Leben ändern wird. Seine Freundin kommt mit der Einsamkeit auf der Hallig nicht zurecht. Ein Trost nach der Trennung sind die Gespräche mit seiner Jugendliebe Margret, die ihn ab und zu besucht. Gleichzeitig entwickelt sich eine Freundschaft zwischen Brar und seiner einzigen Nachbarin Ines Nahnsen. Ines erzählt ihm von ihrer Nachkriegskindheit auf der Hallig und den Jahren auf Amrum, als sie in einem Hotel gearbeitet und sich in den verheirateten Sohn des Hauses verliebt hat. Aber dann erkennt Brar, dass Ines ihm etwas verschweigt - und dass ihr Geheimnis auch sein Leben auf den Kopf stellen könnte...
