 Ein Pfandleiher steht neben der aufgebahrten Leiche seiner Frau, die sich gerade das Leben genommen hat. In einem ergreifenden inneren Monolog lässt er seine Ehe mit der "Sanften" Revue passieren, die ihn einst heiratete, um einer Notsituation zu entgehen. Zunächst begegnet ihm die junge Frau mit Dankbarkeit. Doch je stärker er sie einengt und bevormundet, desto mehr entzieht sie sich ihm. Die Gefühlskälte ihres Mannes zerstört nach und nach ihren Lebenswillen und treibt sie schließlich in den Freitod. Erst als es zu spät ist, merkt ihr Mann, wie sehr er seine Frau geliebt hat.
