Bei ihm hat das aber nur noch wenig mit dem Melusinenstoff des Mittelalters zu tun. 1807 erschien das Märchen Die neue Melusine als Teil von Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahren. Der stärkste Hinweis auf diesen Stoff ist womöglich der Titel der kleinen Geschichte. Ein Schlangenweib kommt nicht vor, dafür eine Frau, welche sich von Zeit zu Zeit in einen Zwerg verwandelt und währenddessen in einem Kästchen lebt. Sie besteht darauf, dass das Kästchen von dem Mann, der sie liebt, nicht geöffnet wird. Nachdem dieser sie aber eines Tages durch einen Spalt im Kästchen erkennt, verzeiht sie ihm, besteht allerdings darauf, dass er vor niemandem davon spricht…
