Märchen bildet in China kein streng gesondertes Gebiet. Von den Ammengeschichten und Fabeln bis zu Göttermythen, Sagen und Novellen sind die Grenzen durchaus schwankend. Das Wunderbare gehört für China noch zum natürlichen Weltlauf, so dass hier sich keine scharfe Grenze ziehen lässt.
Es war einmal ein Nachkomme des Konfuzius. Dessen Vater hatte einen Freund, der im Süden Beamter war und den jungen Mann als Sekretär anstellte. Als er aber an dem Orte seines Wirkens ankam, da war der Freund des Vaters schon gestorben. Er war nun in großer Verlegenheit, da er nicht die Mittel hatte, um wieder heim zu reisen. So suchte er denn zunächst eine Unterkunft in dem Kloster Puto, wo er für den Abt heilige Bücher abschrieb.
